Vacuum Planetary Mixer (Sealed Bowl -- Degassing + Solvent Stripping)
A vacuum planetary mixer seals the mixing bowl with a hydraulically clamped lid and applies vacuum during planetary mixing, removing entrained air bubbles, preventing oxidation of sensitive formulations, and enabling solvent stripping under mild temperature. It produces bubble-free dense pastes and adhesives while eliminating the need for a separate degassing step, reducing overall cycle time. Widely used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and electronics manufacturing.

Challenges
Dynamic Seal at the Drive Shaft
The rotating and orbiting drive shaft passing through the sealed lid creates a difficult sealing condition, with air ingress risking loss of vacuum during mixing.
Product Splash onto Seal Face
High-speed mixing before vacuum is applied can throw product onto the lid seal seating area, compromising seal integrity.
Foam Surge at Vacuum Onset
Applying vacuum too rapidly causes sudden foam collapse, leading to an uncontrolled increase in product volume and potential overflow.
Cold Trap Overload During Solvent Stripping
High evaporation rates can overwhelm the cold trap, allowing solvent vapour to reach and contaminate the vacuum pump.
Cleaning the Lid and Shaft Seal Area
The underside of the lid and the rotating shaft seal cavity are difficult to reach during cleaning, creating residue accumulation risk in GMP environments.
Solutions
- Magnetic Coupling Drive (Seal-Less, Zero Dynamic Seal at Lid): Magnetic coupling transmits orbital and rotational torque through the sealed lid -- no shaft penetration.
- Magnetic Coupling Drive: Transmits torque through the sealed lid without any shaft penetration, eliminating the dynamic seal entirely and removing the primary source of vacuum leakage.
- Fill Level Interlock at 70% Bowl Volume: The control system prevents vacuum from being applied above 70% fill, ensuring adequate headspace to contain any foam surge during degassing.
- Staged Vacuum Pull-Down: Vacuum is applied gradually in steps, for example from atmospheric to -0.3 bar, then -0.6 bar, then -0.9 bar, with a hold period at each stage. This allows foam to collapse in a controlled manner without overflow.
- Oversized Cold Trap: Sized well beyond the peak evaporation rate of the process, the cold trap condenses solvent vapour before it reaches the pump, protecting pump oil from contamination.
- Dedicated CIP Spray Arm on Lid Underside: A rotating spray arm mounted on the lid underside, combined with a dedicated flush port at the seal groove, ensures full cleaning coverage of all shadow zones after each batch.
Applications
- Pharmaceutical: Bubble-free ointment and cream, suppository base, sterile GMP mixing without air inclusion.
- Electronics: Potting compound, thermally conductive paste, void-free encapsulation resin, solder paste.
- Cosmetics: Oxygen-sensitive serum, bubble-free foundation, anti-ageing cream without air entrapment.
- Chemical: Reactive adhesive degassing, solvent-based sealant, void-free structural epoxy paste.
- Food Processing: Vacuum-degassed fondant, aroma-preserved confectionery, bubble-free soft gel filling.
