Sanitary / Hygienic Gear Pump (3-A / EHEDG)
A sanitary gear pump is an external or internal gear pump manufactured to hygienic design standards — all product-contact surfaces SS 316L Ra <0.8 µm electropolished, Tri-Clamp connections, self-draining geometry, dead-leg-free internal design, and mechanical seal rated for CIP (140°C) and SIP (121–135°C). Processing 0.1–500 m³/h at 1–500,000 cP, it transfers viscous food, dairy, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology fluids with full traceability, validated cleanability, and zero contamination risk — 3-A Standard 4-XX certified for dairy; EHEDG Doc. 35 certified for food and pharma.

The gear set and casing are manufactured to tighter tolerances than industrial models — Ra <0.8 µm on all wetted surfaces, with crevice-free internal geometry that eliminates dead zones where product accumulates between CIP cycles. CIP fluid enters through the pump inlet and flows through the gear chamber, seal housing, and back-flush connection at minimum 1.5 m/s velocity — achieving validated cleaning to <10 ppm TOC residual without disassembly. SIP capability allows steam at 121–135°C to sterilise the internal surfaces before each production run. Tri-Clamp connections allow rapid clean connection and disconnection — no threads to trap product.
Challenges
CIP Velocity Requirement (>1.5 m/s) Through Narrow Gear-to-Casing Clearance
Low-clearance gear design restricts CIP flow velocity through the gear chamber — shadow zones can form.
Mechanical Seal CIP and SIP Compatibility at 140°C CIP and 121°C SIP
Standard mechanical seals degrade above 80°C — hygienic seals must withstand 140°C CIP and 121°C SIP cycles.
Electropolished Surface Ra <0.8 µm Maintenance After Assembly
Post-machining assembly operations can introduce burrs or tool marks — surface re-qualification needed.
Validation of Cleanability with Riboflavin Spray Test
Gear pump internal geometry must be validated for spray coverage — rotating gears present spray shadow challenge.
SIP Steam Condensate Removal Without Dead-Leg Trap Points
Steam condensate must drain fully — any condensate trap point prevents complete sterilisation.
Solutions
- Oversized CIP Flush Port + Gear-Pump Reverse Operation During CIP: CIP flush enters dedicated port; reverse gear rotation assists cleaning flow through gear chamber clearances.
- EPDM / PTFE Mechanical Seal Rated 140°C CIP, 135°C SIP (API Plan 02): EPDM O-rings and PTFE seat rated for CIP/SIP — API Plan 02 (quench) maintains seal face temperature.
- Post-Assembly Electropolishing of Complete Pump Interior (Ra <0.4 µm HPAPI): Complete assembled unit electropolished — achieves Ra <0.8 µm on all assembled wetted surfaces.
- Static Riboflavin Spray Test + Dynamic CIP Conductivity Monitoring: Riboflavin test maps CIP coverage; inline conductivity sensor confirms detergent penetration and rinse completeness.
- Full-Bore Self-Draining Geometry (3° Minimum Slope on All Internal Surfaces): Gear pump body machined with 3° minimum drain slope — no condensate trap points; full gravity drainage
Applications
- Dairy: Milk, cream, yogurt, cheese curd, whey — CIP/SIP validated hygienic transfer; 3-A certified.
- Food & Beverage: Liquid egg, fruit puree, sauce, dressing, beverage concentrate — EHEDG validated.
- Pharmaceutical: Oral liquid, syrup, parenteral formulation, WFI-compatible — Ra <0.8 µm GMP; Ra <0.4 µm sterile.
- Biotechnology: Cell culture media, fermentation broth, enzyme solution — ultra-gentle, validated cleanable.
- Cosmetics: GMP cosmetic liquid filling — shampoo, conditioner, body lotion — hygienic validated transfer.
