Top-Drive RMG — Standard GMP Configuration
A top-drive RMG mounts both the main impeller drive and chopper drive above the bowl — transmitting torque downward through a top-entry shaft to interchangeable impeller blades. Processing 2–1,200 L with main impeller at 100–500 RPM and chopper at 1,500–3,500 RPM, it achieves granule density of 0.4–0.8 g/cm³ and D90 of 0.2–2.0 mm — the most widely adopted pharmaceutical wet granulation configuration for GMP batch processing worldwide.

Challenges
Granule Size Inconsistency from Variable Binder Addition Rate

- PLC Binder Control (Peristaltic Pump + Mass Flow Meter, ±2%): Closed-loop mass flow control maintains binder rate within ±2% — consistent PSD.
- Recipe-Based Chopper Speed Profile (VFD, Auto-Stop at Power Plateau): PLC auto-stops chopper at torque plateau — prevents over-granulation.
- Contained Charging (Split Butterfly Valve + N₂ Purge): Closed charging maintains OEB 3–4; N₂ purge eliminates dust during powder loading.
- Double Mechanical Seal with Barrier Fluid: Pressurised barrier fluid — zero product ingress; 10,000-hour rated life.
- Power-per-Unit-Mass Scale-Up (W/kg = Constant): Constant energy per kilogram — validated PSD equivalence from 2 L to 1,200 L.
