Bin / IBC Blender
A Bin/IBC blender mounts a standardized transportable stainless-steel IBC onto an external rotating drive frame, tumbling it through programmed rotation sequences. The same vessel serves as blending container, storage unit, and direct transfer unit to tableting or encapsulation; eliminating intermediate powder transfer that causes RTD broadening, blend non-uniformity, and contamination exposure. Capacity range: 100–3,000 L.

The drive frame rotates the sealed IBC through programmed forward rotation, oscillation, and intermittent reversal sequences. Asymmetric IBC geometry (non-round cross-section, off-centre valve, weld beads) generates irregular cascade trajectories, disrupting segregation equilibrium. Intermittent reversal disrupts stratification developing during unidirectional rotation. NIR probes through IBC wall provide continuous non-invasive blend endpoint monitoring without cascade disruption.
Challenges
Geometry Not Optimized for Blending
Cubic IBC creates repetitive cascade trajectories promoting segregation equilibrium.
Corner Dead Zones
Right-angle internal corners accumulate powder with minimal cascade redistribution per revolution.
Fill Level Mismatch
Storage fill (70–90%) significantly exceeds optimal blending window of 40–60%.
Cohesive Powder Adhesion
Cohesive powders adhere to IBC walls; unresolvable by tumbling action alone.
Long Times for Low-Dose Actives
Diffusion-limited cascade inadequate for achieving <1% w/w API content uniformity.
Solutions
- VFD Oscillation + Reversal Programming: Continuously disrupts segregation across all bin surfaces per programmed cycle.
- Internal Lifter Baffles: CIP-compatible baffles disrupt cascade and eliminate corner dead zones.
- IBC Geometric Qualification: Dimensional verification ensures consistent cascade dynamics across qualified bin lots.
- Pre-Blending Intensification: High-shear granulator step reduces cohesion index prior to IBC blending.
- Ordered Mixing for Low-Dose Actives: API pre-attachment to excipient carrier reduces cascade mixing time required.
Applications
- Pharmaceutical: Closed-system final blend and direct transfer for HPAPI, OEB 4–5 formulations; containment-mandatory.
- Nutraceuticals: Multi-component supplement blending with direct bin transfer to filling lines.
- Specialty Chemicals: Contained blending of sensitizer formulations; cross-contamination prevention.
- Food-Grade: Allergen-controlled environments requiring validated cross-contamination control between product families.
