High-Pressure Inline Homogeniser (Valve-Type)
A high-pressure inline homogeniser forces liquid feed through a precision-machined homogenising valve at pressures of 100–1,500 bar — generating intense shear, cavitation, turbulence, and impact forces that reduce particle size to <0.1–1 µm, enabling nanoemulsions and liposome production inaccessible to rotor–stator designs. Processing 1–50,000 cP at 50 L/h–20,000 L/h, it is the standard technology for sterile pharmaceutical parenteral emulsions, dairy UHT homogenisation, and nano-particle formulation.

Challenges
Valve Seat Erosion at High Operating Pressure (>500 bar)
Continuous high-velocity fluid through narrow valve gap erodes seat geometry — PSD drift.
Piston Seal Wear and Product Leakage at Maximum Pressure
Piston seal failure at >500 bar causes product bypass and significant pressure loss.
Product Temperature Rise (ΔT = 2°C per 100 bar Pressure Drop)
At 400 bar, product rises 8°C — requires interstage or post-homogeniser cooling for thermolabile APIs.
Limited Throughput vs. Rotor–Stator at Equivalent Power
High-pressure piston design limits maximum throughput to 20,000 L/h vs. 50,000+ L/h for rotor–stator.
Pulsating Flow from Piston Action Affecting Downstream Process
Single or twin-piston designs produce pressure pulsations — dampener required on sensitive lines.
Solutions
- Ceramic or Tungsten Carbide Valve Seat and Impact Ring: Sintered TC or alumina ceramic valve extends service life 8–15× against corrosive and abrasive fluids.
- PTFE-Based Piston Seals with Cooling Water Flush: Cooled PTFE piston seal assembly rated >10,000 hours at 1,500 bar operating pressure.
- Interstage Plate Heat Exchanger (ΔT Target <5°C Post-Stage): Product cooled between piston and valve stages — maintains thermolabile API below degradation temperature.
- Triple-Piston (3-Throw) Crankshaft Drive (Pressure Variation ±3%): Three pistons at 120° phase offset reduces pulsation to ±3% — acceptable without dampener.
- Pulsation Dampener (Bladder Type, 0–1,500 bar Rated): Bladder dampener absorbs pulsation to <±1% on downstream instrumentation and process lines.
Applications
- Pharmaceutical: Parenteral fat emulsions (TPN), sterile nanoemulsions, liposome size reduction, API nanoparticles.
- Dairy: UHT milk homogenisation, cream standardisation, cheese emulsion, protein beverage.
- Food & Beverage: Salad dressing, mayonnaise, infant formula homogenisation, beverage cloudifier.
- Biotechnology: Cell disruption for intracellular protein extraction, virus-like particle processing.
- Chemical: Nano-pigment dispersion, polymer nano-latex, specialty chemical ultra-fine emulsion.
