Twin-Screw Pump
A twin-screw pump uses two intermeshing double-pitch screws counter-rotating in a figure-8 housing to transfer fluid in sealed axial cavities at 100–5,000 RPM across 1–500,000 cP, delivering 0.5–500 m³/h at up to 40 bar. The non-contact screw clearance (no metal-to-metal touch) enables gas-entrainment handling and multiphase (gas + liquid + solid) transfer making it the standard pump for hygienic food/pharma filling lines and demanding industrial multiphase applications.

Two external-timing-gear-synchronised screws counter-rotate never making contact. Fluid entering the pump is axially advanced between the intermeshing screw threads in discrete sealed chambers. The symmetric dual-inlet design (fluid enters from both ends toward centre outlets or vice versa) balances axial thrust loads, eliminating thrust bearings in many configurations. Non-contact operation means no metal particle contamination. Clean-in-Place compatibility and 3-A hygienic certification available for food and pharmaceutical grades.
Challenges
Tight Clearance Sensitivity to Abrasive Solids
Non-contact screw design relies on liquid film lubrication; solids >500 µm cause scoring.
Gas Entrainment Efficiency Reduces with Speed
Above 2,000 RPM, gas-liquid slip increases; multiphase handling efficiency drops.
High Initial Cost vs. Single-Screw
Twin external timing gear and precision screw machining commands significant premium.
Bidirectional Seal Design Required
Symmetric dual-inlet creates equal pressure at both shaft ends requires two balanced seals.
Complex Maintenance of Timing Gear System
External gear lubrication requires scheduled inspection and oil changes.
Solutions
- 100–500 µm Inlet Strainer: Removes particles before screw clearance zone; maintains non-contact hydrodynamic film.
- Hardened Screw Chrome-Plated Surface: Increases surface hardness to 60 HRC; resists soft abrasive particle scratching.
- Double-Acting Balanced Mechanical Seal: Seals both inlet ports simultaneously; handles full differential pressure at shaft ends.
- Integral Oil-Bath Timing Gear Box: Isolated lubrication circuit; scheduled 4,000-hour oil change interval.
- VFD with Gas-Fraction Monitoring: Inlet gas fraction sensor adjusts speed to maintain stable multiphase pumping efficiency.
Applications
- Food & Beverage: High-capacity dairy, sauce, beverage and ingredient transfer 3-A hygienic certified.
- Pharmaceutical: API solution metering, high-pressure filtration feed, filling line supply pump.
- Oil & Gas: Multiphase wellhead transfer, crude oil boosting, gas-liquid-solid transfer.
- Chemical: Polymer, adhesive, resin, and solvent high-pressure transfer.
- Cosmetics: Large-volume filling line supply, cream/lotion tank-to-tank high-pressure transfer.
