Conventional Solid Pan Coater
A conventional coating pan is an open-mouthed, tulip or onion-shaped solid shell rotating on an inclined axis (30–45°). Tablets tumble inside the pan while coating liquid is ladled or sprayed and warm air is blown into the mouth. Simple, robust, and low in cost, it handles 1–250 kg batches of sugar, film, and seasoning coats for pharmaceutical, confectionery, and food products.

A gear motor with worm reduction drives the pan at 5–40 RPM. The inclination and curved profile lift the bed and roll it back, creating continuous surface renewal. Coating syrup or suspension is added manually or through an air-atomizing spray gun. A hot air blower with heater (40–60°C) supplies air into the pan mouth while a separate hood extracts moisture and dust. The batch unloads by tilting the pan or through a discharge chute.
Challenges
Low Drying Efficiency
Air passes only over the bed surface, slowing drying and extending cycles.
Dead Zones
No internal mixing leaves slow-moving tablets at the pan bottom.
Operator Variability
Manual ladling causes batch-to-batch coating variation.
Dust and Vapour Exposure
The open mouth releases dust and vapour into the room.
Cleaning Difficulty
Deep curved shell and weld seams trap coating residue.
Solutions
- Immersion Air Tube: Delivers hot air into the bed for 30–50% faster drying.
- Removable Anti-Slip Baffles: Increase bed turnover and eliminate dead zones.
- Timed Spray Dosing: Peristaltic pump, spray gun, and PLC timer standardize every charge.
- Exhaust Hood + Dust Collector: Captures dust and vapour at the pan mouth.
- Seamless Polished Shell: One-piece spun pan with Ra <0.4 µm internal finish for fast cleaning
Applications
- Pharmaceutical: Small-batch sugar and film coating of tablets and pills.
- Confectionery: Sugar coating, dragees, and coloured candy shells.
- Food & Snacks: Seasoning and flavour coating of nuts, peanuts, and snacks.
- Seeds & Agro: Seed treatment, seed pelleting, and granule coating.
- Ayurvedic & Herbal: Pill coating and finishing for traditional formulations.
