Tank & Vessel Mounted Vertical Ladder (Shell-Mounted, Curved-Shoe)

A tank or vessel mounted vertical ladder is a fixed vertical ladder permanently attached to the cylindrical shell of a tank or vessel — it shares all structural principles of a fixed vertical ladder but uses curved-shoe standoff brackets that conform to the vessel shell curvature instead of flat wall brackets. The curved shoe is fabricated to the tank shell radius and welded or clamp-bolted to the shell, maintaining a constant 150–200 mm clearance between the ladder stringer back face and the vessel shell across the full height. Used for routine access to tank roofs, level gauges, manway connections, and valve stations at heights of 1,000–20,000 mm on tanks from Ø800 to Ø20,000 mm.

Challenges

Shell Perforation or Stress Concentration at Weld Lug Attachment Points on Thin-Walled Tanks

Welded pad lugs on thin-shell tanks (3–6 mm wall) create stress concentration — stress corrosion or fatigue cracking around lug weld.

Ladder Misalignment on Large-Diameter Tanks from Manufacturing Out-of-Round

Tank shell ±5 mm out-of-round tolerance causes curved bracket clearance to vary — stringer alignment error on tall ladders.

Ice Formation on Outdoor Ladder Rungs in Cold Climates

Exposed rungs on outdoor tanks collect ice and frost — severe slip and grip reduction; ladder unusable below 0°C without treatment.

Rung Coating Failure from Thermal Expansion Differential (Insulated Tank Surface)

Tank surface temperature cycles from −20°C to +80°C — thermal cycling causes applied anti-slip coating to delaminate from SS rung.

Ladder Length Change Due to Tank Thermal Growth (±10 mm on 10 m Tank at 100°C Rise)

Tank shell grows axially at operating temperature — fixed-foot ladder shortens relative to shell; bracket weld overstressed.
