Fixed Vertical Ladder & Cage (Safety Cage) Ladder
A fixed vertical ladder provides permanent access to elevated equipment, tanks, platforms, and roofs — fabricated from two parallel SS stringers (side rails, typically flat bar 60×8 mm or channel 60×30 mm) connected by horizontal SS rungs (round bar Ø25–Ø32 mm at 225–300 mm vertical centres) welded or swaged in position. Heights from 1,000 mm to 12,000+ mm; width of 400–600 mm clear rung width. For heights above 3,000 mm (EN ISO 14122-4 requirement), a safety cage (hooped cage: hoops at 900 mm centres, vertical bars at 300 mm centres) is added around the climb path — forming a cage ladder. Above 6,000 mm, rest platforms are required at maximum 6,000 mm intervals within the cage.

Stringers are fixed to wall, vessel shell, or structural steelwork using adjustable standoff brackets at 1,800–2,000 mm centres — brackets allow ±50 mm adjustment for alignment and thermal movement. Rungs are welded to stringers at equal centres (225 mm for GMP/pharma; 300 mm for industrial) with a minimum 150 mm clearance between rung back face and structure. For cage ladders, hoops (Ø600–680 mm inner clear diameter, fabricated from 32×6 mm flat bar bent to radius) are welded to vertical cage bars at 900 mm vertical centres. The cage extends from 2,200 mm above landing level to the top of the ladder — at the ladder top, a swing-over safety hatch or step-through opening provides access to the platform. A personal fall arrest rail (vertical lifeline) can be specified as an alternative to a cage for slimmer installation.
Challenges
Rung Corrosion Under Accumulated Foot Scale and Debris in Outdoor Industrial Installations
Horizontal rung surfaces accumulate dirt, scale, and moisture — crevice corrosion under solid deposits on SS rung upper face.
Ladder Foot Slip During Descent in Wet or Product-Contaminated Rung Conditions

Cage Hoop Corrosion at Weld Joints from Condensation Trapping Inside Cage
Condensation inside the cage accumulates at hoop-to-vertical-bar weld joints — crevice corrosion attack inside the cage body.
Stringer Bracket Fatigue at High Vibration Locations (Adjacent to Running Machinery)
Dynamic vibration transmitted through bracket into stringer — fatigue cracking at stringer-bracket weld after extended service.
Cage Inner Diameter Too Small — Operator Cannot Back Off Rung (EN 14122-4 Minimum 600 mm)
Sub-standard cage inner diameter prevents operator from stepping off rung onto platform — fall risk at ladder top.
Solutions
- Grooved (Knurled) Rungs or Anti-Slip Rung Covers (Ribbed GRP or Rubber Grip Strip): Knurled SS rung surface or applied GRP anti-slip cover increases grip in wet and contaminated conditions — maintains R11 anti-slip rating.
- Rung Profile: Fluted/D-Shaped Bar (Flat on Top, Round Below) for Maximum Grip and Drainage: D-profile rung provides flat grip surface; rounded lower profile sheds water and dirt — self-cleaning, higher grip than circular rung.
- Full-Penetration TIG Welds on All Hoop-to-Vertical-Bar Joints + Acid Passivation: Full-penetration TIG weld at every cage joint eliminates crevice — passivation forms continuous protective film over all joints.
- Vibration-Isolated Bracket (Rubber-Bonded Anti-Vibration Mount Between Bracket and Structure): Anti-vibration mount decouples ladder stringer from vibrating structure — protects stringer weld from dynamic fatigue loading.
- Minimum Cage Inner Diameter 680 mm (Above EN 14122-4 Minimum 600 mm) on All New Installations: Specify 680 mm inner clear diameter — provides comfort margin above minimum; matches EN 14122-4 OSHA 1910.23 compliance.
