Pressure Safety Devices — Safety Relief Valves, Rupture Discs, Pressure Switches

Pressure safety devices protect process equipment from overpressure by automatically discharging excess pressure (safety relief valves), providing a fail-safe one-shot rupture event (rupture discs), or providing a binary electrical signal at a preset pressure (pressure switches). Safety relief valves (SRV) are spring-loaded self-reclosing valves — they open at set pressure, discharge, and reclose when pressure falls below reseat pressure; required by ASME Sec. VIII, PED, and all pressure vessel codes. Rupture discs are single-use burst discs — they open irreversibly at burst pressure, providing full-bore instantaneous discharge for explosions and runaway reactions. Pressure switches provide on/off electrical outputs for alarms and interlocks at defined setpoints.

Rupture Disc Corrosion from Process Fluid (One-Side Exposure) Reducing Burst Pressure

Corrosion of disc face reduces effective disc thickness — burst pressure falls below design; premature disc rupture.
