Tangential Cam-Blade Sigma Mixer
A tangential cam-blade sigma mixer uses two counter-rotating cam (kidney-shaped) or naben-profile blades that rotate in overlapping trajectories with minimal clearance (1–3 mm) — generating the highest inter-blade shear of all sigma-type designs. Processing 1–1,000 L at viscosities of 10,000–2,000,000 cP at 5–40 RPM, the tangential design provides intensive distributive and dispersive mixing simultaneously — the preferred configuration for dispersing solid fillers (carbon black, silica, pigment) into polymer and rubber matrices requiring maximum shear without raising melt temperature excessively.

Cam blades are shaped so that as one blade rotates to maximum extension toward the trough wall, the other blade rotates to minimum extension — maintaining a near-constant inter-blade gap volume that traps and shears material continuously at the blade meeting zone. This tangential geometry intensifies dispersive mixing at the blade nip relative to sigma blades — achieving finer filler dispersion per unit energy. The differential speed ratio (2:1 to 3:1) ensures material is folded from one blade to the other each cycle. Cam blade profile is precisely CNC-machined to maintain 1–3 mm inter-blade clearance across the full blade sweep arc.
Challenges
Precise Blade Clearance Maintenance (1–3 mm) Under Thermal Expansion
Blade thermal growth at elevated temperature may reduce inter-blade clearance to zero — contact.
Higher Torque Than Sigma at Equivalent Speed and Viscosity
Cam blade generates greater torque demand than sigma at same conditions — motor sizing critical.
Complex CNC Profiling Cost vs. Standard Sigma Blade
Cam profile machining requires 5-axis CNC — higher cost and longer lead time than sigma blade.
Filler Agglomerate Passage Through 1–3 mm Gap
Large hard agglomerates (>3 mm) cannot pass through cam inter-blade gap — blade damage risk.
Trough Wall Wear from Close-Clearance Cam Tip
0.5–2 mm cam tip-to-wall clearance causes rapid trough wall wear with abrasive compound.
Solutions
- Temperature-Compensated Blade Shaft Position (±0.1 mm Thermal Compensation): Blade shaft position adjusted by thermocouple-linked actuator — maintains clearance across full temperature range.
- Oversized Gear Drive (2.5× Running Torque Rating) with Thermal Overload Relay: Gearbox rated to handle cam peak torque demand; thermal relay protects against sustained overload.
- Blade Material Upgrade: Pre-Hardened Tool Steel (HRC 50+) vs. Cast Iron Standard: Tool steel cam blades maintain dimensional accuracy across 10,000+ production hours.
- Pre-Crushing Stage (Jaw Crusher or Pre-Mixer) for Large Agglomerates: Agglomerates pre-reduced below 2 mm before cam mixer feed — prevents gap blockage and blade damage.
- Hardened SS 316L or Nitride-Treated Trough Liner: Hard trough liner (HRC 50) matched to cam tip material — wear shared equally; 3–5× service life.
Applications
- Rubber & Elastomers: Carbon black dispersion into rubber, silica-filled tyre compound, high-hardness rubber kneading.
- Chemical: Ultra-high-viscosity adhesive, structural sealant, highly filled resin compound.
- Plastics: HDPE and PP highly filled compound, colour masterbatch with high pigment loading.
- Pharmaceutical: Ultra-high-viscosity gel base, suppository mass with high wax content, dental material kneading.
- Food Processing: Extremely stiff dough, high-fat/high-sugar confectionery mass, dense nougat and caramel compound.
