Drum Lifter and Tipper
A drum lifter and tipper grips a 50 to 200 litre drum in a clamp cradle, raises it, and inverts it in a controlled arc to empty powder into a receiving hopper or sieve. Available as mobile manual-hydraulic units or fixed powered stations in SS 304/316L, it eliminates two-person manual drum handling for loads from 100 to 350 kg.

Available as mobile manual-hydraulic units or fixed powered stations in SS 304/316L, it eliminates two-person manual drum handling for loads from 100 to 350 kg.
The drum is rolled onto the cradle and secured by a band clamp or geometry-matched saddle. Hydraulic or electro-mechanical actuation lifts the cradle along the mast, then a rotation gear or cam inverts the drum over the discharge point. A hand-pendant or fixed control station paces rotation so powder pours progressively. Mobile versions run on braked castors for multi-point service.
Challenges
Drum Slip from the Clamp
Dented, rimless, or plastic drums slip in standard band clamps during inversion, dropping the load.
Powder Bridging Inside the Drum
Compacted or hygroscopic powder holds back in the inverted drum, requiring hazardous manual rodding.
Operator Strain Positioning Drums
Rolling and aligning full drums onto the cradle still demands significant manual force.
Dust Cloud at Open Pouring
Free-fall pouring from an inverted drum generates a dense dust cloud at the receiving vessel.
Floor Space Conflict at Machines
Fixed tipping stations occupy floor area directly at machine charging points, obstructing other traffic.
Solutions
- Dual-Clamp with Underside Support Saddle: Combining the band clamp with a base support saddle and drum-type-specific inserts retains damaged and plastic drums securely through the full arc.
- Pneumatic Drum Vibrator on the Cradle: A cradle-mounted pneumatic vibrator activated during discharge collapses bridges and empties the drum without manual intervention.
- Low-Level Roll-On Cradle Design: A cradle lowering to floor level lets drums roll on without lifting, cutting the manual positioning force to a push.
- Discharge Cone Head with Extraction Ring: A cone head clamped to the drum before inversion channels powder through a spout into a sealed inlet with extraction, suppressing the dust cloud.
- Shared Mobile Unit Serving Multiple Points: One castor-mounted tipper with defined docking positions serves several machines, releasing fixed floor space at each charging point.
Applications
- Raw Material Drum Charging to Sifters: Emptying excipient and API drums into vibro sifters at dispensing and granulation areas.
- Food Ingredient Drum Discharge: Tipping flavour, colour, and additive drums into blender charge hoppers at food plants.
- Chemical Powder Reactor Charging: Controlled drum discharge of specialty chemical powders into reactor charge chutes.
- Cosmetic Pigment and Base Handling: Dust-controlled emptying of pigment and talc drums at cosmetic powder processing lines.
- Salvage and Rework Powder Recovery: Emptying rework drums back into the process through check screens.
