Hygienic Stainless Steel Silo
A hygienic stainless steel silo is a fully welded SS 316L or SS 304 vessel built to GMP and EHEDG principles, with internal surfaces polished to Ra 0.8 micron or better, crevice-free welds, and integrated CIP spray coverage. It stores pharmaceutical excipients, APIs, dairy, and infant nutrition powders from 1 to 60 m3 under controlled hygienic conditions.

Powder enters through a sanitary inlet with a sterile-grade vent filter handling displaced air. All internal corners carry minimum 50 mm radii and welds are ground flush and polished. Retractable or fixed CIP spray devices wet every internal surface during wash cycles, followed by validated hot air drying before the next fill. Discharge passes through sanitary valves with tri-clover or aseptic connections.
Challenges
Cleaning Validation Shadow Zones
Nozzle bosses, level probe entries, and vent connections create spray shadows where residue escapes CIP coverage, risking cross contamination.
Residual Moisture After Wet Cleaning
Incomplete drying after CIP leaves surface moisture that cakes the first powder contact layer and supports microbial growth.
Allergen and Product Changeover Assurance
Multi-product plants must prove complete removal of allergens or previous actives before changeover, extending downtime.
Surface Finish Degradation
Abrasive powders and repeated cleaning progressively roughen internal polish, increasing residue adhesion and cleaning difficulty.
Static Charge Accumulation on Powders
Insulating organic powders generate electrostatic charge during filling, creating ignition risk and powder adhesion to walls.
Solutions
- Riboflavin-Tested Spray Coverage Design: CIP device layout proven by riboflavin coverage testing, with flush-mounted instruments and self-draining nozzles, eliminates cleaning shadow zones.
- Validated Hot Air Drying Cycle: A HEPA-filtered hot air drying step with dew point verification at the drain confirms complete dryness before powder recharge.
- Swab-Verified Changeover Procedure: Documented changeover cleaning with swab and rinse-water testing to validated acceptance limits assures allergen and API removal.
- Scheduled Surface Audit and Repolish: Periodic Ra measurement at reference points triggers local repolishing before finish falls outside the hygienic specification.
- Full Earthing and Bonding Network: Bonding of shell, internals, filters, and connected pipework to a verified earth grid dissipates static charge below incendive levels.
Applications
- Infant Formula Base Powder Storage: Hygienic buffering of base powder between spray dryer and dry-blending under strict microbiological control.
- Pharmaceutical Excipient Dispensing Feed: GMP storage of lactose, MCC, and mannitol feeding dispensing isolators in OSD facilities.
- Dairy Powder and Whey Protein Storage: Storage of WMP, SMP, and WPC powders with CIP between product changeovers.
- Nutraceutical Premix Holding: Contamination-controlled holding of vitamin and mineral premixes before encapsulation and sachet filling.
- Enzyme and Probiotic Powder Storage: Controlled-environment storage of sensitive biological powders with sterile venting and low-moisture assurance.
