Bi-Lobe Pump
A bi-lobe pump uses two identical two-lobed rotors counter-rotating in synchronised mesh to displace fluid in discrete sealed chambers between each lobe and the casing. Operating at 10–500 RPM across 1–500,000 cP, it delivers flow rates of 0.5–200 m³/h at differential pressures up to 15 bar providing gentle, low-shear positive-displacement transfer for viscous, shear-sensitive pharmaceutical and food products.

Challenges
Pulsating Flow (2 Pulses/Rev)
Bi-lobe configuration produces pronounced pressure pulsation, requiring dampeners on sensitive downstream lines.
Limited Dry-Running Capability
Rotor-to-casing clearance requires product lubrication; dry running causes rapid casing wear.
Abrasive Solid Particle Wear
Hard particles in slurry exceed clearance tolerance and score rotor and casing surfaces.
High-Pressure Slip at Low Viscosity
At viscosities below 100 cP, internal slip across rotor clearances reduces volumetric efficiency.
Noise at High Speed (>300 RPM)
Bi-lobe pulsation generates mechanical noise exceeding 85 dB(A) without acoustic enclosure.
Solutions
- Pulsation Dampener on Outlet Pipework: Bladder-type dampener reduces pressure variation to ±5% of mean discharge pressure.
- Flushed Mechanical Seal (Clean Fluid Purge): Continuous clean liquid flush prevents dry-running and cools seal faces.
- Hardened Rotor Coating (Tungsten Carbide): Extends rotor life 5× against abrasive slurries and crystalline product wear.
- VFD Speed Control (10–500 RPM): Lower speed increases residence time per cavity; restores volumetric efficiency at low viscosity.
- Acoustic Enclosure + Anti-Vibration Mounts: Reduces noise to <78 dB(A); prevents vibration transmission to connected pipework.
Applications
- Pharmaceutical: API slurry transfer, cream/ointment dosing, viscous liquid metering, GMP hygienic transfer.
- Food & Beverage: Jam, honey, chocolate, cream, fruit pulp, sauce and thick beverage transfer.
- Dairy: Cream, yogurt, cheese curd, whey concentrate, condensed milk gentle transfer.
- Cosmetics: Lotion, gel, cream, and paste transfer without shear-induced phase separation.
- Chemical: Resin, adhesive, polymer, and lubricant positive-displacement transfer.
